Melbourne earthquake stronger than previously thought Geoscience Australia revised it to 4 magnitude

The earthquake that struck the northwest tip of Melbourne on Sunday night was stronger than originally thought.

Geoscience Australia said today that it had raised the quake’s magnitude from 3.8 to 4, and also revealed that there were aftershocks with a magnitude of 2.6 just two minutes after the mainshock.

More than 26,000 people in an area stretching from Albury in the north of the state all the way to Hobart reported feeling the effects of the earthquake at the time.

The earthquake occurred at 11.41pm on Sunday, when most Melbourne residents were asleep, with its epicenter in the outer suburb of Sunbury.

Although it wasn’t particularly strong, the relatively shallow depth at which it occurred meant that it was felt more extensively than normal.

While most Australian earthquakes are generated about 10 kilometers underground, the Sunbury earthquake was shallower, about 3 kilometers below the surface.

Geoscience Australia says nationwide, there is a magnitude 5 earthquake higher every one to two years.

Destructive earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or higher occur approximately every 10 years.

Although the Sunbury earthquake has been updated, it still lags significantly behind the 2021 earthquake which was centered in the small Victorian-era town of Rawson.

The Rawson earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 5.9 and was felt from Sydney to Hobart, west to Adelaide and, of course, Melbourne. More than 43,000 “felt reports” were submitted in the aftermath of the Rawson earthquake.

On average, Australia experiences about 100 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or greater each year, according to Geoscience Australia.

Earthquakes greater than magnitude 5, such as the devastating magnitude 5.4 earthquake in Newcastle in 1989, occur approximately every one to two years.
