‘Like an earthquake’: Tulsa woman’s home uninhabitable after storm damage

Tulsa, Okla. (KTUL) — Some Tulsans are suffering the effects of damaging winds Monday as cleanup efforts continue.

Bronda Gray told NewsChannel 8 on Monday that her downtown home took a direct hit from a severe storm system over the weekend that left thousands of Tulsans in the dark and scattered debris across town.

Gray said a tree fell on part of the house when the most damaging winds moved across the subway, forcing her and her family to take shelter.

“How did that sound? How would you describe it?” NewsChannel’s John Hayes was asked 8.

“Like an earthquake,” said Gray.

Fortunately, Gray said no one was hurt, but the tree cleared out the guest bedroom and left a huge hole in their master bedroom as well.

“There’s glass,” Gray said, “we don’t know what’s in it. The power has been cut, but we don’t know if there are electrical wires.”

Gray said she’s mostly grateful that no one was in the room that took a hit after so many guests and family stayed with them during the 16 years they lived in the house.

“The guest room, if someone’s in there, the chances of them making it are slim,” Gray said.

Gray said she and her family are currently staying in a property that is temporarily rented while the damage is assessed and they get back on their feet.

“We helped our neighbors,” said Gray, “if you can help your neighbor, help your neighbor. Check them out.”

Gray said that for now she and her family are going to take it day by day and feel for the other Oklahoman who are in her family’s place. She said the family hopes to rebuild the house because of how sentimental he is about her.

“We have a lot of memories here and we want to keep those memories here,” said Gray.
