The Noto Peninsula earthquake caused total damage of 1.15 trillion yen to civil engineering facilities, agriculture, forestry, fisheries and small and medium-sized enterprises in Ishikawa Prefecture, according to recent estimates.

“The amount is beyond imagination,” Ishikawa Governor Hiroshi Hase said in a press conference on Friday marking the two-month anniversary of the powerful earthquake that struck the prefecture. “We must aim to make our infrastructure more resilient.”

About 3,900 infrastructure facilities, such as roads and river-related sites operated by the Ishikawa Prefectural Government and 17 municipalities in the prefecture, were damaged by the January 1 disaster, with total damage reaching an estimated 630 billion yen.

Damage to agriculture, forestry and fisheries industries reached 200 billion yen, and damage to small and medium-sized enterprises reached 320 billion yen, according to estimates.

As of Friday, the total death toll from the disaster reached 241 people, and 76,813 homes were damaged. More than 10,000 people have been displaced, and about 18,000 families in seven municipalities, including Wajima and Suzu, remain without water.
