China has mobilized a battalion of People’s Liberation Army soldiers near Passule Lipulekh in Uttarakhand, one of the places along the Current Control Line that has witnessed the movement of Chinese troops over the past few weeks outside the Ladakh sector, people familiar with the matter said. “There has been an accumulation of PLA troops across the LAC at Lipulekh Pass, parts of North Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh,” a senior military commander said.

Kathmandu escalated tensions with India this year after she changed her political map to reckon the Kalapani area including Lipulekh – which lies near the India-China-Nepal crossroads – as her own.

At Pass Lipulekh, the PLA has moved a battalion – approximately 1,000 soldiers – a distance away from the border.

“It’s a signal that Chinese troops are prepared,” said a second army officer. He added that India has matched the strength of PLA troops and is keeping a close eye on Nepal in the context of its recent border claims.

“The situation on the Current Control Line remains dynamic with the PLA trying to emphasize its presence beyond Ladakh by building infrastructure on their side of the LAC,” the senior military commander quoted above said.

In Ladakh and elsewhere, troop movements and mistrust have prompted the military to prepare to station soldiers on icy Ladakh heights throughout the winter, despite how withdrawal and de-escalation efforts were withdrawn.
