British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday gave his brother Jo – a former junior minister who resigned following his older brother’s approach to leave the European Union – a big honor with a seat in the House of Lords.
Philip, the husband of former prime minister Theresa May, will also receive a knight “for political service”, the government said, revealing a list of 36 nominations.
Former House of Commons Speaker John Bercow, who has repeatedly tried to foil the government’s Brexit plans, has however been denied a seat in the upper house.
He is the first former speaker in more than two centuries not to receive this honor.
Other notable new lords include Russian-born British newspaper owner Evgeny Lebedev and Brexit-supporting cricketer Ian Botham.
But the appointments have drawn contempt from Johnson’s political enemies.
He has displayed “the worst kind of cronyism” by giving jobs for life to “friends and those who have helped him”, said Scottish National Party opposition MP Pete Wishart.
Brexit supporters have accused Bercow of creating barriers to voting in the year it took lawmakers to bicker to finally ratify the UK-EU divorce deal.
A 2018 report also accused Bercow of presiding over a culture in which “bullying, harassment and sexual harassment have been able to thrive” in parliament. He denied the allegations.
But he also enjoyed his fair share of success.
His bellows of “Order! Order!” during the Brexit saga went viral and briefly made him an international media star.
Bercow posted a “candid” autobiography and joined the lucrative speaking circuit after resigning in October.
When news that he might not be selected for a peerage was first reported in June, Bercow explained that he had “made a lot of enemies” while overseeing the lower house for 10 years.
“I’m not going to stay awake at night worrying about it,” he told the BBC.
“There are people who have their own grievances and agendas who think I just don’t belong.”
The House of Lords will now have over 800 members, as peers are allowed to resign or retire, but are expected to serve for life.
“This list of new peers marks a missed opportunity to downsize the House of Lords,” said House of Lords Speaker Peter Fowler.
Fowler’s office had recommended reducing the chamber to 600 members.
