San Jose Earthquakes answer late and defeat Seattle Sounders

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Jeremy Ebobisse came off the bench to score a minute after Danny Musovski pulled Seattle even late in the second period, leading the San Jose Earthquakes to a 3-2 victory over the Sounders on Saturday night.

Ebobisse's strike came on the break, as he slid into the box to touch in Jack Skahan's cross into the far corner, en route to the Quakes' first win after four successive defeats to start the season.

“It was a great feeling, especially for the players. The players were great in trying to improve,” coach Lucie Gonzalez told reporters after the win. “Obviously we are disappointed with the results. We know it didn't go our way, but we saw early in the week in the competition and their energy and belief. Together they demonstrated this determination.

San Jose defender Vitor Costa de Brito scored a goal in the 42nd minute, Christian Espinosa followed with a goal one minute later, and the Earthquakes (1-4-0) led 2-0 at the end of the first half.

De Brito used an assist from Bruno Wilson from a corner kick to score his second goal in his fifth career appearance. Espinoza scored with a right-foot shot at the post – after a review – to give the Earthquakes a two-goal lead.

The Sounders equalized in the second half with a penalty kick goal scored by Raul Ruidiaz in the 72nd minute, and Danny Musovski equalized in the 81st minute. Cody Baker assisted Musovski's first goal of the season. Ruidiaz has scored two goals this season.

Even the return of goalkeeper Stefan Frei has failed to put the winless Sounders (0-2-2) on the right track this season. Seattle went 0-1-2 with Andrew Thomas in goal while Frye recovered from a hamstring injury.

San Jose's win evens the series all-time at 15-15-9, but the Earthquakes have reached a 4-0-1 record in five games since the start of the 2022 season.

William Yarbrough stopped five shots in his first career start for the Earthquakes. Yarbaugh spent the previous four seasons with the Colorado Rapids, who traded him to San Jose in January.

Frei finished with four saves for the Sounders.

“It gives us confidence, but keeping it in context is important. Earlier, we were not on the board, and it was not the end of the world,” said Ebobis. “It is not the end of the season.
