A nationwide seismic drill is scheduled for March 25

MANILA, Philippines – The public is urged to participate in a nationwide earthquake drill on Monday, March 25.

The Office of Civil Defense will hold a simultaneous Nationwide Earthquake Drill (NSED) at 9:00 a.m. with Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, as the ceremonial site.

“We ask for the participation of various sectors in this activity,” Ariel Nepomuceno, OCD director, said in a statement.

“While NSED teaches us what to do during an earthquake, this activity is not enough,” he added. “There are more strategies and interventions that we must implement.”

At the ceremonial site, a camp-level evacuation and communication exercise will be conducted to demonstrate and test the government's coordination mechanisms in the event of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake caused by the movement of the West Valley Fault.

The so-called megaquake — a 7.2-magnitude quake that struck the Metro Manila area — is expected to kill at least 52,000 people and injure about 500,000, according to a 2019 study by risk assessment and consulting firm PSA Philippines Consultancy Inc.

The government conducts nationwide earthquake drills every three months. The National Economic Development Meeting for the fourth quarter of 2023 was held on November 9, with OCD reminding the public to remember to avoid panic and “crouch, cover and hold on” during the earthquake.

The last quarter NSED was broadcast live on the Facebook pages of OCD–PH Civil Defense and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

According to OCD, nationwide earthquake training was conceived following the devastating earthquake that struck Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on May 27, 2006.
