An earth science teacher at Half Hollow Hills was teaching about earthquakes — and then it hit all at once

In a seismic twist of fate, a routine geoscience lesson about earthquakes at Half Hollow Hills East High School in Dix Hills turned into an experience of a lifetime for teacher Katherine Jennings and her students.

The timing couldn't be more perfect. It was exactly 10:23 a.m. on Friday, April 5 — that's when Long Island felt a 4.8-magnitude earthquake that originated in New Jersey.

“Class here started at 10:20,” Jennings told the press. “My students came in, and we were getting ready to start our class, which was a normal day. Then I introduced them to the lesson, saying, ‘There are two types of earthquake waves that we are going to learn about today. One is called a P wave and it travels faster than the others. The other is the S wave, which travels slowly. “And then the ground started shaking.”

The timing was so surreal, some students even thought he was staged.

“I couldn't believe it,” Jennings added. “I initially thought it might have been the boiler in the basement, but it kept running for about eight seconds – that's when I realized how lucky I was. No one was hurt, which made it even more lucky.”

Jennings said she was telling the students how rare earthquakes are on Long Island because there are no major fault lines nearby — but she speculates that this quake may have been caused by the Ramapo Fault, which runs through New York, New Jersey and New York. Pennsylvania, or connected Hopewell fault.

Between the earthquake and the eclipse next Monday, there has been no shortage of geological events for Jennings' Earth Sciences class to experience this year.

Jennings hasn't given any assignments or homework related to the Long Island earthquake yet, but she might do so — and since they've all lived through it, she expects students to be excited about the topic.

“I'm really excited to set something up,” Jennings said. “Maybe next spring break, I'll sit down and get the data.”
