A strong earthquake strikes Japan, injuring 9 people with minor injuries

TOKYO – A powerful earthquake that struck southwestern Japan slightly injured nine people and caused damage such as burst water pipes and small landslides, authorities said Thursday. But there was no tsunami risk.

The 6.6-magnitude quake was centered late Wednesday off the west coast of the main island of Shikoku in the southwest of the country, in an area called the Bungo Channel, a strait that separates Shikoku from the main island of Kyushu in the south.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake occurred at a depth of about 50 kilometers (30 miles) below sea level and did not pose a tsunami risk.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said Thursday that six people in Ehime Prefecture, one in neighboring Kochi and two others in Oita on Kyushu Island suffered minor injuries, most of them from falls at their homes.

Water pipes were ruptured in a number of locations in the city of Sukumo, Kochi Prefecture, and grave stones at a Buddhist temple in the town of Ainan, Ehime Prefecture, collapsed, according to local media reports. Roof falls have also been reported.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said no malfunctions were reported in four reactors operating at three nuclear power plants in Shikoku and Kyushu.

As part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. A 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in March 2011 devastated large areas along Japan's northeastern coast, killing nearly 20,000 people and causing the Fukushima Daiichi disaster. On January 1, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the north-central region of Noto, killing 241 people.
