2.1-A strong earthquake shakes Somerset County

SOMERSET COUNTY, N.J. — A preliminary 2.1 magnitude earthquake rocked Somerset County Friday evening, one of dozens of aftershocks to hit the state since the April 5 4.6 quake.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred shortly after 10 p.m., about six kilometers west-southwest of Gladstone.

The aftershock is one of several tremors that struck the region this week. The USGS recorded several small earthquakes in Somerset and Hunterdon counties, all of which originated near Califon, Whitehouse Station, or Lebanon.

The aftershocks come two weeks after a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck the tri-state area. The US Geological Survey said more than 42 million people may have felt the initial quake, with its epicenter about 45 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia.

Earthquakes are less common in the eastern regions of the United States than on the western edges because the East Coast does not lie on a tectonic plate boundary. The US Geological Survey said 13 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or stronger since 1950 have been recorded within 311 miles of the April 5 quake.

The strongest earthquake was the 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Mineral, Virginia, on August 23, 2011, which shook people from Georgia to Canada.
