A 5.5-magnitude earthquake rocks Taipei days after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake killed 17 people.

The Central Meteorological Administration said the quake occurred on Monday in the eastern city of Hualien, the area that was the epicenter of the earthquake that struck Taiwan on April 3.

A powerful 5.5-magnitude earthquake shook the Taiwanese capital, Taipei, on Monday evening (April 22), days after it was hit by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake on April 3.

The earthquake struck Taiwan around 5:08 PM local time (02:38 PM EST).

The Central Meteorological Administration said the quake occurred on Monday in the east of Hualien City, the area that was the epicenter of the April 3 quake.

In a post on its official social media channel, the Hualien Fire Department said it had sent teams to inspect for any disaster caused by the earthquake.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and report in a timely manner,” the post added.

Agence France-Presse quoted one of its employees as saying: “It sounded like one of the strongest earthquakes or aftershocks since the big earthquake that occurred earlier this month.”

The earthquake earlier this month triggered landslides around the mountainous region, cutting off roads and severely damaging buildings in the main city of Hualien.

Up to 17 people were killed in the quake, with the last body discovered on April 13 in a quarry.

The April 3 earthquake was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, which caused rocks to fall around the city of Hualien.

This was the most severe in Taiwan since 1999, when a 7.6-magnitude force hit the island.
