The family of missing Australian earthquake victims calls on rescuers to stay safe

The families of an Australian couple missing after the Taiwan earthquake earlier this month have issued a statement saying they wish to resume the search for their loved ones only when it is safe for rescuers.

The search for Isaac Sim Huy Kok and An Nyu Siu Chu was temporarily halted on April 12, nearly two weeks after they were hit by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake, when it became too dangerous for rescue teams.

The families said today that they “cannot allow more risks to rescue teams.”

The search for Isaac Sim Hue Kok and Ann Nyu Siu Chu was suspended on 12 April.

They said in a statement today: “The families desperately want to find them, but cannot allow this to put someone else’s life at risk.”

The Australian and Singaporean couple were vacationing in Taiwan when they were caught in the earthquake while hiking in the country's Hualien area.

“The families would like to thank every member of the Hualien County Fire Department, especially Wu Zhaoyuan, Jian Hongzheng, Wen Zhonghao, Wang Weijun, Lin Qifeng, Su Xingzhi, and the search and rescue dogs for their dedication and hard work. Efforts in searching for our family.

“The events have made us deeply appreciate the value of life.

“We ask them to resume the search and rescue operation as soon as it is safe to do so. But we also ask them to do so by always putting their safety first.”

The family also expressed their thanks to officials and emergency services in Taiwan, and consular offices in Singapore and Australia.

“We hope that Hualien can be rebuilt as soon as possible so that more people can experience the beauty of the place and the warmth of its people.”
