North Carolina was struck by a small earthquake that originated near the Charlotte Airport on Monday morning

A 2.2-magnitude earthquake struck south of the Charlotte Airport a few hours after midnight Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

The magnitude of the quake was very small, according to Kenneth Taylor, state geologist with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. The scale ranges from 2.5 or less (usually not felt) to 8.0 or more

“You can count to four and the whole event has already happened,” Taylor said of the quake, which lasted less than 10 seconds.

Experts say people usually feel earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 3.0. Witness reports of mild shaking came from Charlotte, Statesville and Bristol, Tennessee, according to USGS reports.

No damage had been reported as of Monday afternoon, Taylor said. The communications department at Charlotte Douglas International Airport said there were no disruptions or other impacts on operations.

Since 1776, people living inland in North and South Carolina have felt small earthquakes and suffered damage from larger quakes, according to the USGS. Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the interior Carolinas every few decades and are felt once every year or two.
