A weak earthquake strikes near Marion

A weak earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale shook nerves and a few windows at 8:02 Thursday evening.

The epicenter was just under five miles from the surface between 170 and 180 and Remington and Sunflower roads, southwest of Marion.

The reason was not immediately known.

Some earthquakes are attributed to human activities such as trapping water behind dams, injecting fluids into the Earth's crust, extracting fluids or gas, and removing rocks in mining or quarrying operations.

Everyone may be involved in this site. However, the most common cause of earthquakes in Marion County is a geological formation called the Niemha Uplift.

The uplift, which geologists say was created by or was one of the forces behind the Flint Hills, often produces quakes like the one felt Thursday.

Earthquakes are not common in Marion County.

In 2023, a total of 32 earthquakes were reported in the province. Most of them were lighter than 2.8 degrees.

Earthquakes between magnitude 2.5 and 5.4 are usually felt but rarely cause damage. Earthquakes that cause damage are usually magnitude 5.5 or greater.

The size scale is logarithmic. Every one-fold increase is equivalent to a ten-fold increase in the Earth's motion.

The most recent earthquakes in the area were just a few days ago — a magnitude 2.2 Apr 28 a mile east of Herrington Airport in Morris County, a magnitude 2.4 Apr 27 four miles southeast of Cedar Point in Chase County, and a magnitude 2.6 also April 27, three miles away. Miles southwest of Woodbine in Dickinson County.

Marion County Jail dispatchers and callers felt the quake Thursday, including from a home in the 500 block of N. Copple Street in Marion.
