The earthquake was felt in southern Arizona

According to the US Geological Survey, the 4.6 magnitude earthquake could be felt as far north as the quartzsite area.

YUMA, Ariz. — If you were in southern Arizona early Wednesday morning, you probably felt a small tremor in the ground.

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake southeast of Mexicali in northern Mexico shook parts of Arizona early Wednesday morning.

According to the USGS, the quake began just before 5 a.m., and was mainly felt by Yuma residents, but some tremors reached as far north as Quartzsite.

If you feel an earthquake, you can report it to the USGS so researchers can get a clearer picture of the earthquake's effects.

The US Geological Survey considers a magnitude 5.3 earthquake a moderate earthquake, while a magnitude 6.3 is considered a strong earthquake. Each whole number on the scale represents a tenfold increase in the measured magnitude of the earthquake.

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake, like the one felt Wednesday, is often felt, but usually causes only minor damage.
