The location of the West Coast earthquake swarm will be the focus of the upcoming ONC-B.C

In March 2024, about 200 earthquakes per hour were detected off Vancouver Island deep on the Pacific seafloor, accumulating to nearly 2,000 earthquakes in a single day.

This was the highest rate of earthquakes observed in this region since 2005.

According to Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), one of the earthquakes had a magnitude of about 4.1, marking the event as a “peak swarm.”

“No one should be concerned about this large swarm of earthquakes. They are offshore and cause no danger. Instead, the data is exciting for the scientific community and certainly not represents a threat.”

Now, Ocean Networks Canada is embarking on a 21-day expedition from June 6 to 26 to visit five sites within the 800-kilometre cable-linked seafloor NEPTUNE Observatory, located off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Megan Paulson, director of observatory digital operations at Ocean Networks Canada, told Global News that for the Ocean Exploration Fund, they do annual maintenance to collect data, introduce new science experiments, or retire science experiments that have expired.

She said they were particularly excited about the area where the earthquake swarm was detected.

“The Endeavor field is located at the intersection of two tectonic plates, the Juan de Fuca plate and the Pacific plate,” Paulson said. “These plates spread apart from each other, and when a spreading event occurs, it causes a lot of seismic activity. And because we have sensors, they're connected to our network. We're monitoring this activity in real time. 24 hours a day.”

Because of the increased activity, Paulson said, the team is curious to see what has changed visually.

About 52 people will be part of the expedition, said Allison Fundis, chief operating officer of the Ocean Exploration Trust.

“We're really excited to do this visit and see what it looks like now after the recent seismic activity,” Fondes said. “But it's great to see it live. We're also really lucky that we can share it all with anyone who's online and in real time.”
