Fourth earthquake to hit north metro Atlanta in a week

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A fourth earthquake in less than a week was reported near Lake Lanier early Thursday morning.

The small quake occurred northwest of Buford around 3:20 a.m., on the southern edge of the lake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 2.2 and was about 5.5 miles underground. Only about a half-dozen people reported feeling it, according to a USGS vibration map.

A magnitude 2.0 earthquake struck the same area around 8:37 pm on Sunday. This earthquake was only 0.8 miles underground and was felt more widely.

Two other earthquakes shook the southern edge of the lake late last week.

The first struck at 11:15 p.m. Thursday. It had a magnitude of 2.5 and was just over 2.5 miles underground.

A 2.1-magnitude earthquake struck a few hours later, at 1:30 a.m. Friday, and was about 5.3 miles underground.

A USGS map showed that tremors from the first two earthquakes were felt intensely from Sugar Hill to Chestatee.

There were no reports of injuries or damage after the two earthquakes.
