A number of the quakes over the past few days have been located 150 to 200 kilometres southwest of Vancouver Island, said Andrew Schaefer, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada. The quakes occurred at the intersection of the Juan de Fuca Range: the Suvanku Fault Zone and the Nootka Fault Zone, he said.

The US Geological Survey reported on Wednesday that about five earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 4 to 4.7, occurred in just over two hours.

Natural Resources Canada has recorded about 200 earthquakes in recent days, but there have been more smaller ones that were farther offshore, he said. On Friday morning (July 5), there were a few quakes measuring 5 on the Richter scale.

The most recent earthquake to hit Canada was a 5.2 magnitude quake, about 225 kilometres southwest of Port Alice.

“This is an area on Vancouver Island that is very seismically active. You will see magnitude 2 or 3 earthquakes all the time, and every now and then, we will see a swarm of earthquakes, like this where we see a magnitude 4 or 5 swarm of earthquakes.”

These earthquakes, which range in magnitude from 4 to 5, will occur in close succession, Schaefer said, but he added that this is “still completely normal.”

“We will consider this as business as usual for this part of the west coast of Vancouver Island.”

The earthquakes in this area are “very shallow, but not the kind that would cause tsunamis,” he added. They are also not particularly associated with the Cascadia region.

It's not uncommon to have a few swarms like this in one year, Schaefer added.

“While large earthquakes like this in this area are somewhat concerning to us, fortunately these types of earthquakes do not harm people or infrastructure because of their proximity to the shore,” he said.

“But it's just a good, constant reminder that we live in a tectonically active area, and it's a reminder to be prepared because we have the ability to help others.”
