Earthquake in Edmond on Saturday

Edmond was hit by an earthquake early Saturday morning.

The US Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was near East Covell Road and North Air Depot Street.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 2.7, which came after a 3.5-magnitude quake struck Thursday evening.

Officials say the quakes are linked to a cluster of earthquakes that struck in January.

The quake was one of about 20 before the storm began shaking parts of Edmond and Oklahoma City over the weekend. “I was laying in bed with all my pets and the whole bed in the house just shook,” Brian recalled. “It was crazy and it was so loud.”

The epicenter of those quakes was in Edmond near Lake Arcadia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The city of Edmond says its public works department conducted a visual inspection and found no impact to nearby bridges or crossings. The city also said in a social media post that the Corps of Engineers conducted a physical inspection of the Lake Arcadia Dam and city engineers are awaiting the report. However, the dam is designed to withstand large seismic events.

Some News 9 viewers sent in photos of cracked walls and damage they say was caused by a series of earthquakes. According to the Oklahoma Department of Insurance, standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover earthquake damage. “It’s become more prevalent in the recent past because of all the activity we’ve had,” said Bill Hall, an agent with State Farm Insurance, of the number of people who have signed up for coverage.

Hall says that after an earthquake, his office gets calls from clients about earthquake coverage. Although it’s not part of a standard homeowners insurance policy, he says earthquake insurance is available as an endorsement or as a standalone policy. “You can choose from three options to deduct 5, 10 or 15 percent from your home coverage,” Hall said.

Information on the OID website says that earthquake insurance covers repairs needed due to earthquake damage to your home, and that a homeowner in Oklahoma can expect to pay $50 to $300 a year for earthquake coverage. “I’ve had it since I had a renter’s policy for 25 years and I’ve never used it, but if something major happens, you’re waiting for FEMA to come in and help you if you don’t get some help from your insurance company,” Hall said.
