Mild earthquake felt in parts of New York State

Several fault lines across the region have been a bit active lately, with seismologists saying a quake was felt in parts of New York state this week. But that shouldn’t be confused with the 2.2-magnitude quake that struck Hunterdon County, New Jersey, earlier this week.

The other reported earthquake was felt further north.

Where do earthquakes occur in the region?

Most earthquakes within the state occur either far north toward Quebec, in western New York around Lake Ontario, or near the New York City area. The most famous fault line near our area is the Ramapo Fault.

The 185-mile-long fault system runs through parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and is known to cause smaller earthquakes.

According to the National Earthquake Monitoring Center, about 551 earthquakes were recorded in New York State between 1737 and 2016.

A 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Clinton and Franklin counties in upstate New York on Monday, NBC News reported. The U.S. Geological Survey says the minor quake was centered near the U.S.-Canada border near Ormstown, Quebec.

The quake occurred not far from the western Quebec seismic zone, which can produce larger earthquakes that can be felt along the East Coast, especially in New York State.

New York is no stranger to earthquakes, with the state having been hit by 44 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater.

Could a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit New York?

Some say this fault system is more complex and extensive than originally thought.

A 2008 study suggested that an additional fault zone may extend from the Ramapo Fault into southwestern Connecticut. There are also several smaller faults crisscrossing New York City, and the city may be long overdue for a major earthquake.

There's also the western Quebec seismic zone, which can produce larger earthquakes that can be felt all along the East Coast of the United States, especially as far south as its neighbors in the Empire State. This is where some of the strongest earthquakes occur closest to us.
