Small earthquakes detected near Hanford, experts say no damage expected | news

BENTON COUNTY, Wash. – 134 small earthquakes have been detected around the Hanford Site since Sunday according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.

Scientists refer to these small tremors as crustal earthquakes. These are groups of minor earthquakes that occur in the same area and at about the same time, without a large main shock.

The largest of these quakes measured 2.9 on the Richter scale, too small to be felt by people going about their day.

Such activity is not unusual in the area, noted Erin Wirth, a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

“Swarms occur fairly frequently around[and]throughout eastern Washington. And again, fortunately, these earthquakes are small and are not expected to cause any type of damage to infrastructure in the area,” Wirth said.

One of the largest earthquakes ever to strike eastern Washington was in 1872, referred to as the Entitat earthquake. However, the 7.0-magnitude earthquake has not been overcome, as Wirth says is possible.

“So it's possible for larger earthquakes to occur anywhere throughout the Pacific Northwest. But again, fortunately, these type of events are rare and we don't see them very often,” Wirth said.

Wirth reminds residents that on October 17, the state will conduct a drill for the Great Washington Earthquake. At 10:17 a.m., more than 800,000 people statewide will practice “drop, cover, and wait.”

Wirth also said this would also be a good time to review your emergency plans and update your supply kits.
