The Islamic Organization for Food Security and Kazakhstan enhance food security in earthquake-affected western Afghanistan

ASTANA – The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), with the support of Kazakhstan and in cooperation with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), launched a project to increase wheat production and enhance food security in Herat Province, entitled “Promoting Wheat Agriculture for Sustainable Development in Western Afghanistan.”

According to the press office of the Islamic Organization for Food Security, this initiative focuses on Zindjan Province, which was severely affected by last year's earthquake. It targets 300 farmers, including 45 women.

The project aims to increase wheat production and enhance food security in the region by distributing 15 metric tons of improved wheat seeds of the local Chunt variety, 15 metric tons of DAP fertilizer, and 30 metric tons of urea fertilizer.

“Furthermore, basic agricultural machinery, including two tractors, four ploughs, two trailers, two threshers and two harvesters, has been provided to enhance mechanization and improve wheat cultivation ahead of the 2024 sowing season,” the Islamic Organization for Food Security said on September 30. press release.

The project plans to address post-harvest losses and introduce seed saving practices by 2025.

This initiative is part of the broader Afghan Food Security Program (AFSP), which was launched as a key outcome of the 17th Extraordinary Meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers on the Humanitarian Situation in Afghanistan in 2021 in Islamabad, Pakistan.

The project opening ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Turkish Consul General in Herat Sinan Ilhan, TIKA Herat Office Coordinator Arafat Deniz, Chairman of the Kazakh Chamber of Commerce in Afghanistan Arman Yesentayev, as well as senior officials from the Herat Governor's Office and the Afghan government.
