Rural people feel earthquakes – Appalachians

Boone locals and App State students are no strangers to the High Country’s ever-changing weather. But now, residents of this temperate rainforest can say they have experienced tremors of a 5.1-magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake struck approximately 2.5 miles southeast of Sparta, North Carolina at 8:07 a.m., according to the US Geological Survey. The earthquake occurred in the interior of the North American plate and was followed by four “foreboding aftershocks” ranging from 2.1 to 2.6 meters. The small town is located along the Virginia border about 50.9 miles northeast of Bonn, about an hour’s drive away.

“Large earthquakes are relatively uncommon in the immediate surrounding of the August 9 M5.1 earthquake.” The United States Geological Survey wrote in its earthquake report that moderately destructive earthquakes hit inner Carolina every few decades, and a smaller earthquake is felt once every year or two.

Cameron Moser, a Bonn resident and App State graduate, said that while she was sleepy and not knowing what she was feeling, she heard a rumble during the earthquake.

Moser said, “My first thought was that it was a big truck on the road in front of my house but the sound was so deep, I couldn’t even imagine what kind of car it could be.” “That’s when I logged into Facebook and saw a lot of posts about it and I knew this was what it must have been (an earthquake).”

Chief computer science Jordan Fry said the earthquake stunned him because he was living alone.

“I was awake, but in bed. It felt like someone grabbed the side of my bed and started shaking it back and forth,” Fry said.

While this was the largest earthquake in North Carolina in over a century, some people living in Bonn did not physically feel the earthquake nearby.

“I’ve grown through it,” said Taylor Carroll, Senior Elementary School teacher. My roommate was like ‘Did you feel the earthquake? “And I said,” We had one here? really?”’
