Missouri is preparing for the possibility of a catastrophic earthquake with drills Thursday

street. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – With Missouri being home to the nation's second most active fault line, state officials are encouraging Missourians to prepare for the possibility of a major earthquake.

Missouri is the site of some of the largest earthquakes in US history. The New Madrid Fault runs through southeastern Missouri and produces a few hundred small earthquakes annually. Most of these earthquakes cannot be felt, but in the 19th century, Missouri felt some of the strongest earthquakes, destroying buildings as far away as St. Louis, more than 100 miles away.

Experts at the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency say there is a 20 to 40% chance of a Category 6 earthquake hitting Missouri within the next 50 years. That's why Jeff Briggs, SEMA's earthquake program manager, is encouraging everyone to participate in the ShakeOut Earthquake Drill on Thursday.

“It's a good bet that when there's a big earthquake, if you're near southeast Missouri, there's going to be damage, and anywhere in Missouri, you're definitely going to feel the shaking from that,” Briggs said.

In the event of an earthquake, here's what to do: When the shaking starts, you'll need to get under a desk, table, or other heavy piece of furniture. You want to make sure your head and neck are covered and held on for support.

The state's first response agency, Missouri Task Force One, is training to respond to all natural disasters, including the possibility of an earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Task force leader Chuck Lake said responding to the earthquake requires a coordinated effort from people with different expertise.

“That's all we have to do is lend a hand,” Lake said. “Now, we bring a lot of things with us to do that, but we have people who are highly trained in their job descriptions, in the specialties that they work in.”

Task Force 1 Missouri has never responded to an earthquake, but Lake said the effects of the quake would be similar to the task force's first mission, 9/11.

Neighboring states, including Illinois and Kansas, could also be affected by an earthquake on the New Madrid Fault.
