A previously “unidentified” fault in the Earth's surface was responsible for rocking the Big Apple with a once-in-a-century 4.8-magnitude earthquake on April 5 because it dipped at a 45-degree angle, according to research uncovered by Columbia University's Lamont Doherty. “Near the epicenter, there was much less damage or shaking than would be expected from a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, and that was one of the odd things about that earthquake,” Won Young Kim, a Columbia University professor, wrote in the report. “In New York City, you felt a magnitude 4 quake, so you were shaking so everyone could feel the quake.”

Researchers said seismic activity along the fault line, which runs north-south across the northeast, could pose a greater threat than previously known.

“The realistic scenario is that this type of magnitude 5 earthquake will happen again,” Kim said. “It usually happens once every 100 years, but it could happen tomorrow. This is the unpredictable nature of an earthquake occurring in this region.

The researchers found the new fault line by looking at seismic activity between Earth's surface and the geological layer between the planet's crust and mantle, according to Gothamist, which was first to publish the study.

Overall, more than 500 earthquakes have struck the region since the 17th century, most of them low-intensity and unnoticed at the time.

In 2008, research released by Columbia University said that stronger earthquakes, magnitude 6, were likely to occur in the region every 700 years — roughly 10 times more powerful than the Tewksbury quake.

The April earthquake caused minor damage to 150 buildings in New York City, and prompted a school in Brooklyn to close its gym for repairs.

It did not cause major injuries.

In Newark, officials temporarily evacuated more than two dozen people from their homes to inspect possible damage from the earthquake.
