Jamshedpur: A minor earthquake struck near Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on Saturday around 9:20 am at a depth of about 10 minutes, causing weak tremors that were felt in the surrounding areas. According to the Richter scale, the earthquake measured 4.3.

Tremors were felt in several locations, including Ranchi and Timad, prompting residents to evacuate their homes. The tremors lasted about five seconds and were strongest near the epicenter, east of Chandel. Despite noticeable tremors in nearby areas, including Jamshedpur and Chakradharpur, no immediate damage or injuries were reported.

The tremors, classified as Category 3 on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale, were felt as far away as Patna, Bihar, about 308 kilometers north of the epicenter, although their intensity diminished with distance.

Residents reported mixed reactions, with many describing the sensation as a short rumble. In Jamshedpur, the furniture shook slightly, and some people felt the vibrations while carrying out daily activities.

Jharkhand experiences relatively rare seismic activity, with historical data suggesting about 1.2 earthquakes occur annually within a 100 km radius of Jamshedpur. Most earthquakes are minor, with a magnitude of less than 4.0, and the last significant event occurred several years ago.

However, local authorities highlighted the importance of preparedness, urging residents to keep emergency equipment and identify safe places in their homes in anticipation of possible future seismic events.
