Gujarat: A 4.2 magnitude earthquake hits Mahesana state

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck Gujarat on Friday at 10:15 pm. The tremor was felt in the capital, Ahmedabad, but no injuries or property damage were reported. The western state has been hit by nine major earthquakes in the past 200 years, including the devastating Kutch earthquake in January 2001.

According to the National Seismological Centre, the epicenter of the quake was around latitude 23.71 north and longitude 72.30 east in the Mahesana district at a depth of 10 km – about 219 km northeast of Rajkot in Gujarat state. The epicenter was also located 13 kilometers south-southwest of Bataan.

Officials from the control room of the Earthquake Research Institute in Gandhinagar said that people came out of their homes after feeling the seismic movement. Reports from the northern districts of Banaskantha, Patan, Sabarkantha and Mehsana claimed that residents felt the tremors for two to three seconds.

Seismic tremors were also felt earlier this month in the Kutch district of Gujarat. The 3.4 magnitude earthquake occurred early on November 3, with its epicenter located 53 km northeast of Lakhpat. Days earlier, on October 27, Amreli district in the state's Saurashtra region recorded a 3.7-magnitude tremor. No injuries or property losses due to seismic activity were reported in either case.

Tremors occur frequently in Gujarat and the state remains at high risk of earthquakes. The coastal state was hit by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake in 2001, killing thousands and affecting the entire region. The 2001 Kutch earthquake – whose epicenter was near Bhachao – was the third largest and second most destructive earthquake in India in the past two centuries. According to GSDMA data, nearly 13,800 people were killed and 1.67 lakh others injured.
