A swarm of earthquakes shakes Hawaii on Sunday; Kilauea volcano is still erupting

HILO, Hawaii — A swarm of earthquakes shook the Big Island of Hawaii late Sunday evening, part of a pattern that has continued since 2019.

The USGS reported a 4.3 magnitude earthquake about a mile west-southwest of Pahala, Hawaii, just after 11 p.m. local time. No injuries or structural damage were reported. According to the USGS, the quake triggered a series of four aftershocks in the same area, including a 3.7-magnitude earthquake just 15 minutes later.

The tremors come amid an eruption at Kilauea volcano, just 26 miles north of Pahala.

What happens before a volcano erupts?

The fountain at Kīlauea's summit increased in strength on December 29 (Hawaiian Volcano Observatory/USGS).

According to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Sunday's quakes did not affect Kilauea or Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano.

The initial 4.3-magnitude quake was recorded about 19 miles below the Earth's surface, according to the USGS, and was felt as far away as the island of Oahu.

The agency said more aftershocks are likely in the coming days and weeks.

A similar-sized earthquake was felt last November, and deep seismic activity has been ongoing in the area since 2019, according to the USGS.

Although these earthquakes do not affect Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, it has been erupting intermittently since December 23.

According to the latest update from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the intensity of these eruptions, the so-called “lava fountain,” intensified after weakening in the days following the initial eruption.

Webcam observations by USGS scientists show that these eruptions are currently confined to the crater.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has warned visitors about the dangerous volcanic gas emitted by volcanic eruptions. The wind can carry a mixture of sulfur and carbon dioxide, known as fog, and affect communities not directly adjacent to Kilauea.

Some parts of the park are closed.

This is the sixth eruption within the Kilauea caldera since 2020. According to the USGS, these eruptions in the summit area have continued for about a week to over a year.
