After minutes, the second earthquake at 6.4 size, hit south. Each of the earthquakes has strongly affected the main cities throughout Myanmar and the affected areas include Mandalay, Sagaing, Nay Pyi Taw, Bagway, Magway and parts of the state of Shan.

How did the earthquake affected women and girls in Myanmar?
With the report of dead or wounds, and the critical infrastructure that was damaged, including health facilities, airports, roads, major bridges, electricity and water systems, the catastrophe has increased the challenges facing women and girls of Myanmar.
Even before the earthquake, more than a third of the Myanmar population – including 10.4 million women and girls – do not need urgent humanitarian aid.
The summary of what women and girls compare after the Myanmar earthquake:
1. Women and girls face a growing risk of gender -based violence
With the destruction of homes and infrastructure, women and girls are in written and temporary shelters where they lack privacy and security. In many cases, they reside outside in tents, with blankets or leaves only to separate spaces, and with limited lighting. Without reaching gender -based violence services, survivors cannot get the help they need.
2. The family and children are separated at risk
Children separated from families, care and living providers in overcrowded shelters face greater risk of violence, trafficking and unsafe immigration. The risks are particularly increased for girls, who may suffer from sexual violence or are forced to marry early.
3. Healthcare disrupted fatal consequences for the reproductive health of women
Several hospitals and health facilities were damaged or destroyed, and they still exist. Because of the damaged methods and fuel shortages, women find it difficult to access services. For women and girls, this is translated into a diminishing access to the caring of the survivors of gender -based violence, or from safe birth and mother's health.
4. The lack of clean water, sanitation and hygiene
Women and girls inform that toilets are insufficient, unsafe and bathing spaces, which makes it difficult to maintain hygiene, especially during menstruation, pregnancy and postpartum. In one of the temporary camps, members of the sexual working group at humanitarian work noticed only 14 toilets available to 1,200 people. There is also the risk of diseases from contaminated water sources, as electric pumps do not work.
5. Women and girls are in increased risk of hunger and malnutrition
Food has become rare and there are very few job markets. With high prices, and since women and girls are often responsible for nourishing and caring for their families, they are at risk of getting less food and feeding less quality. Families headed by women are struggling to reach relief in emergency and financial assistance and need sources of income to deal with the disaster.
6. The effect of mental health
Almost everyone is affected by a humanitarian crisis that suffers from psychological distress. About 1 out of 5 people will continue to develop mental health conditions in the long run, however only 2 percent get the care they need. The effect of mental health on the earthquake on the women of Myanmar and teenage girls is deep, as they struggle with the shock of home loss and loved ones, while they are defending to survive and care for those who remain. Fresh shock comes above stress caused by prolonged conflict and economic instability in the country.
Five urgent measures to support women and girls in Myanmar now
Women and girls form half of the affected population and should be an integral part of the humanitarian response. Learn more about how to give a priority to United Nations women safety, dignities and leadership of women and girls in Myanmar.
Sexual assessments: When disaster strikes, governments, United Nations and local partners evaluate the needs of the affected population. United Nations women work with partners on Earth to ensure that women who are affected by crises are sharing in these assessments at the beginning of their own needs and responding to them. Safe shelters and gender -based violence services: Women call on the United Nations with partners to ensure access to shelters with areas that are unloaded between gender, lighting and security, as well as access to monthly cleaning groups and gender -based survivors. Recovering access to health care, including reproductive and mental health needs: There is an urgent need to determine the priorities of sexual and reproductive health services for women and girls, including mother's care, through mobile health units. Ensuring food security and cash assistance: Women need programs for cash assistance and recovery in emergency situations designed for them – especially those that head families, care for others, or live with disability. They also need nutritional help and nutritious options for those pregnant and breastfeeding. Supporting local organizations led by women: local organizations led by women with deep societal relationships, understanding and reaching, play a vital role as respondents for the interface. They need direct and flexible financing.
