A magnitude 4.8 earthquake has been reported in Death Valley National Park

Death Valley, California – At about 10:32 this morning, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Death Valley National Park. The epicenter was about 35 km west of Stovepipe Wells, within the park boundaries in the Panamint Valley. Rangers in Furnace Creek have reported feeling a slight twitch.

Soon after, a 2.8-magnitude earthquake was reported in the same vicinity. In the early afternoon, another 2.5 magnitude earthquake was reported.

No damage was reported to park buildings or roads. Crews continue to monitor damage.

Death Valley this week saw days of another natural phenomenon: extreme heat. On Sunday, August 17, a temperature of 130 degrees Fahrenheit was recorded in Furnace Creek, and record high temperatures continued throughout the week.
