Delhi to commemorate past disasters and prepare for future disasters
New Delhi: In the wake of a series of tremors across the country, and Delhi NCR in particular, the role of citizens in disaster awareness and preparedness has emerged as a crucial point in local talks. The Delhi region faces earthquake hazards from local fault lines, as does the nearby Himalayan seismic zone. As the city celebrates 300 years of the Great 6.5-magnitude earthquake in July 1720, local groups are learning lessons and preparing to be safe from future dangers. With the population now on the rise, with tall buildings and dense settlements, the city area can expect to experience massive damage in the event of a similar earthquake today. Additionally, Delhi is also prone to floods, fires and other disaster hazards.
Citizen collaboration with government agencies to create a culture of disaster preparedness has been very successful globally, particularly in high-disaster prone countries like Japan, and it is emerging as a campaign in Delhi as well.
At an event organized by the Association for Sustainable Environment and Environmental Development (SEEDS), families and schools were identified as leaders of community safety efforts. Meanwhile, Kemal Kishore, a member of the National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India, stressed the need to create a culture of preparedness, which would go a long way in aligning the government’s efforts towards India’s disaster with the efforts of citizens. Referring to the need to learn from the past, he said: “The city needs to commemorate the disasters of the past with initiatives such as the establishment of museums, so that there is always a reminder. Important dates like anniversaries of major disasters can be marked with high-energy festivals. Citizen groups’ engagement with local authorities from a broader perspective is the way forward.
Dr Daya Prakash, Head of RSKV, emphasized the city’s need to ensure the safety of its children, and also shared how Delhi schools are working to identify and address risks to the greatest extent possible locally.
SEEDS, a humanitarian organization that works to build disaster-resilient societies, organized this event today to advocate the need to inculcate a culture of disaster preparedness. Aaj Ki Tayarri Kal Ki Suraksha: The Family Earthquake Safety Initiative campaign is designed to educate people on how earthquake safety planning by families can mitigate risks and play a vital role in saving many lives. The campaign is an offshoot of the Honeywell Safe Schools Program, which is conducted by SEEDS across select government schools in Delhi in partnership with the Delhi government.
Speakers from Delhi and Gurgaon shared citizen views, both on risks and potential for preparedness. Ruby Mukhija, Secretary of the Navjivan Vihar Association for Resident Welfare, highlighted the unrecognized potential of social welfare associations and citizen groups in addressing city concerns including disaster risk. Citing a number of successful initiatives including the Covid administration, she said: “A collaborative approach while recognizing local citizen groups is the way forward to seeing action on the ground.” The scenarios that will unfold in the event of a major disaster such as the earthquake in the Delhi region. “There will be no power, communications will be cut off, people will not be able to move from one place to another, there will be panic everywhere, because we are not thinking about this danger and not preparing enough. Gurgaon has a number of great citizen initiatives such as Rahgiri and Gurgaon,” she said. Moms, as these concerns can be addressed very effectively.
Dr Anshu Sharma, SEEDS co-founder, who was cementing the event, noted, “Talks about Delhi disaster preparedness have reached an all-time high as we celebrate the anniversary of a major earthquake, and group earthquake training was also conducted last time a month. Today we are moving on from the first step. To understand our risks, take the next step in doing something about it. ”
During the event, a survival kit called “BhaGoBag” was revealed. Similar to the global concept of suitcases, which are supposed to be carried during an emergency evacuation from the home, the bag contains items required to safely exit a building that has been hit by a disaster, and to survive for some time in the open air until help comes or one can enter The building is safe.
“Everyone should know enough about building structures to know which part of their home is safe or relatively unsafe, so that they can take refuge in the right places and can evacuate basic materials when the time is right,” said Kemal Chola, Design Director at SEEDS, while displaying the bag. ”
Alongside BhaGoBag, a guide on earthquake safety during COVID-19 was launched by K. Nanda Kumar, Regional General Manager Safety and Productivity Solutions, Honeywell India. He spoke about how Honeywell, as a global leader in safety standards in cutting-edge industries including aviation, believes in detailed planning to ensure a safe future. By calling for the same in Delhi, he addressed schoolchildren in the audience and shared the guide, highlighting the importance of keeping Covid precautions in mind while responding to any emergencies. “Safety is a global concept and the more we talk about it, the more secure we will be. It is important to educate children, the agents of change in our society and instill a culture of safety so that it becomes a behavior. We also need to start a conversation about disaster preparedness and ask questions when someone does not follow safety standards,” he said.
SEEDS plans to launch more such campaigns and more conversations to educate people about the impending dangers and initiate ground-level actions to make the city safer. Creating a culture of readiness, and doing so through our own behavior as citizens, will be the foundation of a resilient Delhi.
