The Isle of Skye earthquake caused the rays of the house to squeak

People have reported rattling windows and cracking of house beams during a small earthquake on the Isle of Skye.

The British Geological Survey (BGS), which monitors earthquakes around the world, recorded a 2.6-magnitude earthquake Friday at around 17:40.

It raised the event’s severity from two to three after receiving more than 30 reports from people who felt it.

The earthquake was felt on Skye and on the mainland coast in the highlands.

The BGS uses an intensity scale ranging from one – not felt or detected by the instruments only – to 12, which indicates a “totally devastating” earthquake.

Two describe an event that is “very soft, felt by very few people,” and three describe an “very soft, few people inside” earthquake.

Earthquakes occur widely across the heights and over the years people have reported feeling earthquakes near Fort William and Glen Coe.

BGS has received reports from people who live 12 miles (20 km) from the earthquake site in Skye.

The residents of Isleornsay, Teanque, Kyleakin, Kylerhea, Breakish, and Camuscross on Skye Island sent reports.

People in Glenelj, Skalasij, Ratajan, Pernera and Sarij said they felt the earthquake.

Some described the walls and floors of their homes shaking, hearing a sound “like knocking on the door”, while others reported hearing a sound like an explosion as well as “thunder followed by a loud”.
