California camp fire survivors face horror again in 2020

Linda Oslin and her husband lost everything when a Camp Fire broke out in their neighborhood in Paradise, California in the fall of 2018.

She’s in her 70s – he’s in his 80s – and they decide they have nothing in them to try to rebuild. This could take years. So they found a place for sale outside of the woods and further down the mountain near Oroville, California where they began to rebuild their lives.

Except for one thing.

They have since had to evacuate from three other forest fires, including last week when a bear fire broke out near the city, burning countless buildings and killing at least ten people.

“Each incident I organize a little more,” says Oslin.

When I heard reports that a bear fire was burning in Berry Creek Village, they did not wait for the official evacuation call. They left knowing that some of their neighbors died in 2018 because they couldn’t get out of Heaven.

Oslin says: “Knowing how the evacuation movement might proceed, we got stuck in it in the camp fire. I said,” Let us finish packing the vehicles and secure everything and then leave. ”

This time, the Oslins are pretty sure their home is still standing – for now. But they are not sure when they will be able to return home. They are staying again with the same friends they took after their horrific escape from Camp Fire. Anything from just a slight smoke smell to the evacuation itself caused their shock.

“Well, we’re fine,” says Oslin, trying to remain hopeful. “We have our share of PTSD sometimes.”

Researchers were just beginning to deal with the cumulative effects of trauma on California wildfire survivors from previous bad fire years like 2017 and 2018. And now, 2020.

“It’s hard to imagine that another fire wouldn’t be a cause for many people,” says Irva Hertz-Pichito, a professor of public health at the University of California Davis.

Hertz-Picciotto, who also directs the university’s Center for Environmental Health Sciences, has spent most of the past two years interviewing survivors of the camp fire. It hopes to give policymakers better tools to help people recover from disasters.

She has researched many of them in her career.

But forest fires are starting to distinguish themselves even in this era of disasters as hurricanes can seem overwhelming in their scope. Wildfires have proven to be a once-in-a-lifetime event, large and shocking events in a particular location.

“Now that we’re in a position where we can expect it now on a yearly basis, this seems to me like a bigger problem than other disasters, like the earthquake or volcano, and we had to rebuild,” Hertz-says Piccioto.

And she says we need to build our back-up infrastructure so wildfire survivors know they will have things like safe, temporary housing and mental health support, which were lacking after the 2018 California fires.

Researchers also say that bad bushfires like this one on the West Coast are the latest indication that they shouldn’t necessarily rebuild or encourage further development in places we know they will burn. In the liberal-leaning West, loose building codes and other factors have been attributed to an explosion of development in wildland fire prone.

However, one of the thorny issues facing the West and many other parts of the country in this era of climate change lies here. Many people live in high-risk fire areas in California and Oregon in particular because it is the only place they can afford.

This predicament weighs on Linda Oslin the whole time. She and her husband intentionally found a new place to live and rebuild their lives that was not in the woods. They have three acres of open pasture. They removed all the trees around their home and rebuilt the driveway so the emergency vehicles could enter.

However, they are being evacuated here and may lose their home again.

“It looks like if you live in California, you really don’t have a choice about it,” Oslin says. “It doesn’t matter anymore where you live.”

So Oslin and her husband focused on what they think they can control: prepare and prepare to be evacuated to safety at all times.

“You only have a small bag,” she says. “The only thing that saved the bacon was getting all of our important papers.”

Those important papers were all about whatever they were left with when fleeing the 2018 Camp Fire. It made things a lot easier in the aftermath, which is something they are willing to do again in case the worst happens with Bear Fire.
