Puerto Ricans continue to grapple with the legacy of Hurricane Maria, three years after a powerful hurricane devastated the island. Political turmoil, earthquakes, and an epidemic have complicated the recovery.

Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017, devastating the island’s infrastructure and leaving an estimated death toll in the thousands.

Sociology professor Fernando Rivera, director of the Puerto Rico Research Center at the University of Central Florida, said the recovery has been slow.

“We might expect, after three years, to make a quick recovery, but again, its severity, the damage to the infrastructure, the political environment and now with the pandemic and other issues occurring, make it very difficult.”

Rivera said it was an uphill battle also for Puerto Ricans who moved to Central Florida after the hurricane, many of whom have struggled with housing and the job market worsened by the pandemic.

“It is clear that with COVID-19 hitting job areas that have been popular with this segment of the population, such as tourism and the hospitality sector, they have been hit hard, to the most by people who live in motels near the Disney area,” Rivera said.

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will allocate nearly $ 13 billion to help Puerto Rico rebuild its electrical grid and repair schools destroyed by Hurricane Maria.

Some Hurricane Maria survivors will hold an event at 1pm on Sunday in Kissimmee to celebrate the storm’s anniversary.
