Got an alert for a 4.5-magnitude earthquake in Los Angeles?

Some people received a 4.5-magnitude earthquake alert Friday night before or shortly after the tremor began. Others got it after it’s over. Some got nothing.

Here’s why.

The US Geological Survey’s ShakeAlert system sent an alert about five seconds after the earthquake started.

Bob de Groot, with the USGS, explains that it takes apps – like MyShake, QuakeAlert USA, and ShakeAlertLA – more time to issue alerts.

The apps have released thousands of them, as Google has done, to Android users who have updated their OS.

“It was amazing to see the number of alerts sent out by all of our service providers,” said de Groot.

De Groot says that some people only received any alert after the shaking had ended because they were so close to the epicenter.

“The earthquake is kind of higher than the rate alerts can generate,” he said.

He says some people were not notified because the estimated vibration intensity in their area was too low to trigger an alert.

Sometimes the person’s phone settings may prevent the alarm from arriving.
