A 2.2 magnitude earthquake has been reported near Sparta

Sparta, North Carolina – Sparta felt another earthquake more than a month after an earthquake that caused hundreds of damage to the city.

At around 11:01 PM, a magnitude 2.2 earthquake was reported about two miles southeast of Sparta. The epicenter was about 1.3 miles underground.

The town of Sparta reported that the damage from a 5.1-magnitude earthquake in Sparta on August 9 was worse than initially thought.

“We hear a continuous rattling throughout our community here in the city and in the Ghani district, but we thank the good Lord to this day for no injuries or deaths,” Mayor Wes Beringar said during a press conference on Tuesday.

While the damage assessments were still ongoing, the town of Sparta had received about 525 damage reports by the end of the business on Monday, said Daniel Schufner, director of the emergency department. Sixty of these cases were classified as “significant damage,” meaning they lost 40% or more in value.

We reduced the damage and that was the number one thing. We were looking for massive damage in our initial reports, but now, the damage is more and more widespread and severe, “Brengar said.

Beringar said that many people who live in Sparta, especially those who are older, are dealing with the emotional trauma that comes with a natural disaster. And 20 aftershocks have not helped since the quake.

We still get those aftershocks and those loud bangs periodically. “There are a lot of people on the edge of the abyss right now and a lot of people have these problems because they are paranoid now,” Brengar said.

The Estep sisters didn’t even come back to look at the damage until Tuesday – more than a week after the earthquake. They own three adjacent properties all deemed uninhabitable.

“Our fathers were here first and they were 54,” said Mary Estep.

In those 54 years, a lot of memories were made there.

Mary Estep said, “All the holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving was here.”

Within seconds, everything changed.

Suddenly it was as if a bomb had exploded. Everything was flying and shaking, and it was terrifying. The only thing I could think of, Mary Estep said, was, “I managed to get her out of the kitchen.”

When the earthquake shook pictures, books, and home decor from the walls and shelves, in the living room she was madly trying to reach her sister, Alice Estep.

She was screaming, “Get out, get out.” And Alice Estep said, and I was saying, “I’m here, I’m here.”

The two women held on to each other, until the two women reached the door only to find it closed on the outside. A neighbor managed to get them out.

They own these two houses and apartments in the middle. All three properties cannot be fixed.

“This is totally a loss for us.” Alice Estep said, “We don’t know where to go, or what to do.”

While it will take months for some people, clean-up efforts have begun for those who document their harm.

An emergency management report was sent to assess the damage to state officials.

“We are relying a lot on state and federal officials to help put people in this county,” said Daniel Rotten, the emergency management coordinator for Ghanaian County.

He hopes the county will get some money to help people in this time of need.

“As we mentioned before, nobody here has earthquake insurance – maybe a handful.” Rotten said.

Unfortunately, with every tragedy, Brenagar said it seemed like someone was trying to take advantage of it. He said scammers are creating GoFundMe pages that ask people to donate.

The Red Cross now houses 19 people from 10 families.

The city does not have an official GoFundMe for victims. Beringar said all the aid will go through the American Red Cross and they have a fund called the “North Carolina, Ghanaian province of Sparta earthquake”.

Schofner says the school system took some damage during the earthquake. The school system has taken the necessary steps to ensure the safety of students and faculty.

The region felt eight aftershocks before the earthquake, in addition to 20 aftershocks.

People felt the 5.1 earthquake had its epicenter in Sparta across North Carolina.

The epicenter was 54 miles northwest of Winston-Salem and 4 kilometers southeast of Sparta. It happened at 8:07 am, according to the official US Geological Survey report.

Many of those who experienced an earthquake said it lasted 10 to 15 seconds.

The 5.1-magnitude earthquake in Sparta was the strongest earthquake to occur in North Carolina since 1916.
