The owner of the Mexico City school that collapsed in the earthquake gets 31 years old

A private school owner in Mexico City, who killed 26 people during a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in September 2017, was sentenced to 31 years in prison on Wednesday.

Monica García Villegas, the former owner and principal of the Enrique Repsamen School in the south of the capital, was found guilty of premeditated murder last month.

A Mexico City court ruled that Garcia had acted negligently by building an apartment for her personal use on the roof of a wing of the school building. The building collapsed in the September 19 earthquake, killing 19 children and seven adults.

The judge determined that Garcia was aware of the dangers of building an additional level in the building and found that building the apartment violated building codes. The extra weight you imposed on the building was identified as a factor in its collapse.

Garcia offered her condolences to the families of the victims but confirmed she was innocent in her recent statement to the court.

In addition to his 31-year prison sentence, Garcia was sentenced to 402,000 pesos ($ 18,900) in damages for each of the two victims and a fine of 123,000 pesos ($ 5,800) for criminal negligence related to the construction of her apartment.

Fernando Castillo Vega, a lawyer for the families of the victims, said he was happy with the verdict, although he left the door open to the possibility of appeal.

“The lawyers and the victims we represent are satisfied,” he said.

The verdict of Garcia, dubbed Miss Monica by her students, brought an end to a three-year nightmare for the families of the victims.

The former school owner went into hiding after an arrest warrant was issued for her in late 2017, but she was arrested in a Mexico City restaurant in May 2019 after her brother alerted authorities to her location and received a reward of 5 million pesos.
