A mysterious earthquake in Scotland leaves geologists in awe

A measurable earthquake that struck Dumfries and Galway on Saturday afternoon bewildered locals and experts as to why the area was now struck by a landslide for the second time in a decade.

The earthquake struck just before 1 pm, and the British Geological Survey (BGS) measured its magnitude 2.0 on the Richter scale – which is small compared to most earthquakes. It was also triggered by an event 6.8 miles below the surface – most of the damaging earthquakes occur near the surface.

However, the earthquake was felt around the epicenter northwest of Dumfries near the village of Drumpark.

The BGS reported that “it was felt by many people in Dumfries, Kirkpatrick-Durham, Thornhill, Donscor, Lochmapen, Southwick, Kirkjohnson and New Galway. According to reports from locals, the earthquake caused ‘weak vibration’, ‘low loud noise’ and ‘ A light roar like thunder. ”

Locals took to Twitter to comment on the earthquake, with one saying it was not a “noisy tractor” while another sarcastically said, “The way it has been this year I hope Godzilla doesn’t wake up.”

Rap Thompson managed to get into a political point when he wrote on Facebook: “Imagine what would happen if this happened a little further west when this proposed tunnel from Portpatrick to Ireland was completed.”

The funniest Facebook comment came from Victoria McNamara who wrote: “I heard a rumble, but I assumed it was wind. I’m a vegetarian, so beans means two on the Richter scale are normal.”

However, there is a serious side to this story, not least because local geology does not indicate why the tremors occurred, especially with any kind of frequency.

The BGS asks people who have experienced the earthquake to help the seismology team by filling out a “physical report” describing their experience with the earthquake. It can be accessed via the BGS website.

The epicenter of Scotland is famous for the town of Comrie Perthshire which is known locally as “Quivering Toon”.

Its proximity to the Highland Boundary Fault – which runs through Scotland from Hellensburg in the west to Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire in the east – is the reason it has received more earthquakes than anywhere else in Scotland. The Earthquake House, which was built on a field on the western side of Comrie, is the smallest listed building in Europe.

The Dumfries and Galway is the southernmost region of the boundary fault, but the area has been known to have suffered from small earthquakes in recent times.

In fact, just ten years ago, an earthquake measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale struck the region, and a previous earthquake of magnitude 3.6 struck the town of Dumfries itself in 2006.
