UNICEF and WHO call for urgent measures to prevent major epidemics of measles and polio
UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) released today an urgent call to action to prevent major epidemics of measles and polio, as COVID-19 continues to disrupt immunization services around the world, leaving millions of vulnerable children at increased risk of preventable childhood diseases.
The two organizations estimate that $ 655 million is needed to address dangerous immunity gaps ($ 400 million for polio and $ 255 million for measles). countries other than Gavi and target age groups.
“COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on health services in particular
vaccination services, worldwide, “commented Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus,
WHO Director-General. “But unlike COVID, we have the tools and knowledge to do so
stop diseases like polio and measles. What we need are resources and
obligations to implement these tools and knowledge into action. If we do, children’s lives
they will be saved. “
“We cannot allow the fight against a deadly disease to cause us to lose ground
to fight other diseases, ”said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director. “Addressing the global COVID-19 pandemic is crucial. However, other deadly diseases are also threatening
the lives of millions of children in some of the world’s poorest areas. For that reason
today we urgently call for global action by country leaders, donors and
partners. We need additional funding for the safe continuation of vaccination campaigns
and give priority to immunization systems that are crucial to protecting children and avoiding others
epidemics other than COVID-19. “
In recent years, there has been a global revival of measles with constant attacks in all parts of the world. Gaps in vaccination coverage were further exacerbated in 2020 by COVID-19. In 2019, measles climbed to the highest number of new infections in more than two decades. Annual data on measles mortality for 2019, which will be published next week, will show the continuous negative tax that permanent attacks have in many countries around the world.
At the same time, poliovirus transmission is expected to increase in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as in many under-immunized areas of Africa. Failure to eradicate polio would now lead to a global resurgence of the disease, resulting in as many as 200,000 new cases per year, within 10 years.
The new tools, including the new oral polio vaccine and the forthcoming Strategic Measles Plan, are expected to be implemented in the coming months to address growing threats more effectively and sustainably and ultimately save lives. The plan is a global strategy for the rapid and effective prevention, detection and response to measles epidemics.

The generous support of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has provided access to funding to date for responding to the outbreak, prevention campaigns and strengthening routine immunizations, including additional support to compensate for vaccination for children missed due to COVID-19 discontinuation in Gavi-eligible countries. . However, significant funding gaps remain in middle-income countries that are not eligible for Gavi. This call for emergency measures will focus on supporting those middle-income countries that do not qualify for Gavi support.
