Yu Meri’s “Tokyo Ueno Station” wins the American Book Award

New York – Writer Yo Meri won the National Book Award for Literature Translated in the United States this year for her novel Tokyo Ueno Station.

The novel, translated by Morgan Giles into English, depicts the life of book narrator Kazuo, who left his family in Fukushima Prefecture to work as a laborer in the capital in preparation for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

The National Book Awards website said the novel is “a welcome and necessary addition to translated Japanese law, evidenced by the memories of a deceased narrator operating the train station of the same name.”

At the online award ceremony, Yu, of Korean descent and raised in Yokohama, said she wanted to share the award with residents of Minamisuma, Fukushima Prefecture, the city struck by the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. And the nuclear disaster where she currently resides and runs a library.

“I am very happy.… I would like to share this joy with the people of Minamisoma, who have been on a road to hardship since the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster.” Yu, 52, said, “This is for all of you.”

Japanese literature has gained recognition from English-language audiences in recent years, as the demand for translated novels has increased from readers looking for more options.

In 2018, Yoko Tawada won the American Prize in the Literary Translation category for her novel The Envoy.

Tokyo Ueno Station sheds light on Japanese society through the eyes of the narrator who lives in a vast homeless village in Ueno Park in central Tokyo.

Speaking at an online press conference on Thursday, Yu suggested that the coronavirus pandemic allowed readers to understand what the character was going through in the book.

“Because of the new coronavirus outbreak, I think (readers) were able to empathize with people who were being pushed aside in society,” she said.

“I wonder how many people who heard the phrase” stay at home “(during the pandemic) actually think about those who don’t have homes.”

Yu has received a number of Japanese literature awards, including the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 1997 for “Kazoku Shinema” (“Family Cinema”). In 2015, it moved to Minamisoma, a city that many residents were forced to evacuate after the earthquake and the nuclear disaster that followed.

“I hope this is a gift for all the locals here,” she said.

Time magazine recommended “Tokyo Ueno Station” in its article on “The 100 Must Read Books of 2020” along with several other novels translated into English from Japanese, including “Sons of the Earth” by Sayaka Murata and “Breasts and the Eggs” by Miko Kawakami.
