We woke up Sunday morning with most of the chills in New England as the temperatures were so much in our teens and twenties.

But some of us also woke up shivering, and there was another small earthquake in the same location that last Sunday. South of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, this was much weaker, but there were reports from those who felt the ground shaking shortly after midnight around Naraganset Bay.

This may follow an earthquake from 3.8 two weeks ago.

The high pressure moved on Saturday night with cooler air, as this altitude now moves to the east with a return flow coming in from the east. This is the cold weather trend.

The sunshine we had on a Sunday morning fades quickly this afternoon with temperatures mostly steady in the 30s into the low 40s.

Snow was accumulating in western New York this morning, but it will probably rise north and miss mostly New England. But it is cold enough that any afternoon rain can be mixed with a little frost. Mostly though our roads remain dry during the evening.

Low pressure will be tracked across Montreal on Sunday night, forcing warmer air into New England thanks to flowing counterclockwise. Tonight winds coming from the south will bring the temperature up into the 1950s in southern New England.

We should all be warm enough to have rain except in the far north of Maine where there is a wintry weather warning for some ice and snow late tonight.

A cold front crosses from west to east on Monday with the possibility of heavy rain during the middle of the day. West of the Connecticut River, the sun should rise in the afternoon as the temperature drops again during the 1940’s to 1930’s.

In eastern New England, we will likely remain wet during the early afternoons as temperatures in the 1950s continued for most of the day before quickly retreating towards sunset.

A fresh batch of cold air comes on Monday night with clear skies and cool temperatures in the 20s and 30s.

The storm’s strength to the north will rapidly increase with winds blowing on Tuesday morning. The wind chill factor will be in odd and teenage numbers, with northerly wind speeds in excess of 35 mph. In Maine, winds may pass at 50 mph, and wind warning might be needed.

High pressure on a Tuesday night means a clear, cold night with cooler teens in the North and 20 to 30 degrees South.

The coming weather system races toward us from the middle of the nation on Wednesday as clouds return and temperatures rise in the low forties. It looks like this storm system will weaken and track above us on Wednesday night and early Thursday on Thanksgiving Day.

Light rain will likely start our vacation, but it’s really low confidence forecasts. Any change in timing or strength could lead to more rain and may continue into the afternoon. It might be cool enough for a wintry mix on the Canadian border, but for most of us it should be back warm to the 50s for Thanksgiving, and hopefully there will be at least some sunshine in the afternoon.

Temperatures seem to be staying on the cool side with droughts late in the week, as seen in our first alerts for 10 days.
