WHO announces Global Diabetes
On World Diabetes Day, the WHO announced the development of the Global Diabetes Compact, a comprehensive and inclusive approach to support countries in implementing effective diabetes prevention and management programs.
The objectives of the agreement, which will be developed by the WHO, are:
- increased capacity of health systems to detect, diagnose and manage diabetes;
- integrating diabetes care into existing programs, thus increasing existing capacities in the health system and meeting people’s health needs in a more holistic way; and
- increasing efforts to promote health in diabetes prevention, especially among young people.
Compact will bring together in one package all WHO materials for diabetes prevention and management, both existing and new. On the preventive side, special focus will be given to reducing obesity, especially among young people. On the treatment side, the emphasis will be on improving access to diabetes drugs and technologies, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
The key to the Pact’s success will be coordination and concerted action in the public, private and philanthropic sectors.
The Compact will be launched in April 2021.
