The Rio Grande warehouse remains closed due to the earthquake, forcing the old cafe to relocate

SALT LAKE CITY – The old Salt Lake City cafe that has been operating in the historic Rio Grande warehouse for decades has announced that it will move out of the building after it was called home nearly 40 years ago.

The Rio Grande Café closed at the start of the epidemic, the magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook things even more, and nine months later, the warehouse and coffee shop are still closed.

He said crews had installed the building and some areas of the roof. However, it is not safe for the audience to enter. Loftin noted that there was still a risk of plaster and debris falling off.

In addition, the building needs seismic upgrades, he said.

In the past few days, Loftin explained, he had discovered that “the cafe is going to disappear”.

The Rio Grande café owners said the restaurant has been operating in that space since 1981, but with earthquake damage not being repaired, they indicated that they needed to move.

According to the owner and a message on the restaurant’s phone, the Rio Grande Café will reopen in a historic fireplace that was used to house the Porcupine Pub and Grille in 1300 East near the University of Utah.

“We will miss them in this neighborhood,” said Loftin. They were a special part of this region. “

He described how some employees and researchers were able to return to work in certain areas of the Heritage and Arts Office in the Rio Grande warehouse.

He said it is still closed to the public and that a farmers’ winter market will not be held there this year.
