US Geological Survey statement regarding increased earthquake activity

(Bevin) – Scientists are monitoring the recent increase in earthquake activity under the summit of Colauea Volcano, and Thursday evening USGS released a media statement on the situation.

Kīlauea does not explode, and the alert level remains at “NORMAL / GREEN”, the lowest alert level on the scale. However, between November 29 and December 3, earthquake rates and ground deformation rates increased for the Kolaouia summit associated with earthquake activity “It was a short trip from the trends observed in the past several months,” the scientists said. On November 29-30, 2020, the United States Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) recorded more than 80 earthquakes beneath the Colauea summit, about 4 miles (6.5 km) southwest of the volcano. Seismic activity began late on the 29th, after 11:00 PM HST, and lasted approximately 11 hours. These earthquakes occurred in a range under the Kīlauea caldera, about 1 mile (2 km) wide and 1-2 miles (1-3 km) below the surface.

On December 2, 2020, increased seismic activity under the Kīlauea summit began shortly after 12:00 AM HST, and increased four hours later with a rate of 10-12 earthquakes per hour. HVO recorded more than 220 earthquakes over the entire 24-hour period. These earthquakes occurred in clusters under the Kīlauea caldera and the Upper East Rift Zone, 1-3 miles (1-4 km) below the surface.

These shallow earthquakes did not pose any danger from ground shaking. The largest event in the sequence was a magnitude 3 earthquake, with the bulk of events being less than 1 on the Richter scale. Most of the events were not reported widely across the population. Felt events reported were described as weak vibration, with a maximum intensity of III on the modified Mercalli density scale.

On the evening of December 2, Klauea’s summit tilt meters were subjected to a transient episode of distortion, recording a noticeable tilt signal (10-14 μR) within a few hours. Inclinometers have since reverted to measuring similar tilt rates in recent months. Other Kīlauea monitoring data streams, including gas and photos, show no signs of increased activity.

The gathering of shallow earthquakes in this region is not unprecedented after the end of the eruption of the Lower East Rift Zone at Kīlauea in 2018 nor does it mean that an eruption is imminent. HVO has recorded shallow earthquakes in this region for several decades across several volcanic cycles at Kīlauea. Recent earthquakes demonstrate that magma is still supplying to the shallow Kīlauea magma storage system. These observations are within the expected behavior of an active volcanic system.

As of the afternoon of December 3, seismic activity and rates of ground deformation at Kīlauea summit decreased and returned to levels close to background. Other monitoring data streams remain stable.

HVO continues to closely monitor geological changes, earthquakes, deformation, and gas emissions at the Kīlauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. HVO will issue additional messages and alert level changes as required by the activity change.
