Two geophysicists at the University of California were honored by the Royal Astronomical Society
The Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) honors two seismologists at the University of California, Santa Cruz for their research contributions to geophysics.
Thorn Lai, Distinguished Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, was awarded the Gold Medal in Geophysics “in recognition of his outstanding work in earthquake analysis, which has had an exceptional impact on our perceptions of the structure and dynamics of the Earth.”
Emily Brodsky, Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, was awarded the Price Medal “in recognition of her distinguished interdisciplinary contributions to earthquake mechanics, frictional behavior, and rocky fluid interactions.”
The Gold Medal is the highest honor in RAS and is often awarded as recognition for a lifetime of work. Lai’s accomplishments began with a PhD. Studies of deep mantle structure, which revealed discontinuities a few hundred kilometers above core and mantle boundaries, suggesting great structural complexity with profound geodynamic consequences. This pioneering work was the cornerstone of a creative, diverse set of interdisciplinary studies in which he pioneered, from the physics of minerals to the fate of the steep slabs and the possible configuration of mantle plumes.
Lai’s research also provided new insights into the world’s most devastating earthquake ruptures and tsunami generation. He has published hundreds of papers and has inspired generations of graduate students, postdoc students, and researchers around the world. As the leader of the seismology community, he has been critical to the success of the Integrated Seismology Research Institutions (IRIS), which archives and distributes earthquake data around the world. He has been elected Chair of the IRIS Board of Directors, served on research committees on the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, and was President of the International Association of Seismology and Internal Physics of the Earth (IASPEI).
The Price Medal is awarded for individual investigations or for a series of investigations closely related to outstanding merit in the formation and formation of the Earth or planets. Brodsky is an internationally recognized pioneer in measuring the processes involved in the generation and propagation of earthquake faults. Its primary modern research objectives have included observational approaches to stress measurement of faults, analysis of human-induced earthquakes, work on granular flows at high slip rates, and analysis of aftershock distributions related to faults rupture and volcanic processes.
Using new combinations of field measurements, laboratory experiments, observational seismology, and theoretical modeling, Brodsky’s research often provides comprehensive insights into the problems they address. To test faulty friction models at field scale, she argued that a ruptured fault should be drilled as soon as possible after an earthquake. JFAST Rapid Response provided seabed drilling disrupted by the 9th Tohoku earthquake data requested. Her work showed that the dynamic weakness of the already weak clay material at the plate boundary occurred to the tohoku rupture. Using downhole thermal observatories, I also detected fluid pressure redistribution in the damage zone around major boundary faults. In announcing the Price Medal, RAS indicated that the novelty of its approaches and the relevance of its work set Brodsky apart.
RAS announced the 2021 Awards at the association’s regular meeting on Friday, January 8th. The winners will be invited to receive their prizes at the RAS National Astronomy Meeting in July.
“I am delighted that we can learn about the wealth of talent in astronomy and geophysics through our prestigious awards and medals,” said Emma Pons, President of RAS. “In the midst of a challenging time, we must not lose sight of the achievements of the stars of our scientific community, and our inspiration by answering deep questions about the Earth under our feet and the universe around us. Congratulations to all the winners!”
What Are The Main Benefits Of Comparing Car Insurance Quotes Online
LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / June 24, 2020, / Compare-autoinsurance.Org has launched a new blog post that presents the main benefits of comparing multiple car insurance quotes. For more info and free online quotes, please visit https://compare-autoinsurance.Org/the-advantages-of-comparing-prices-with-car-insurance-quotes-online/ The modern society has numerous technological advantages. One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
