UNICEF provides psychosocial support in the earthquake zone

Zagreb, January 29, 2021 – Mobile teams of selected experts in the field of psychosocial support for children and families in the regions of Glena, Petringa and Sisak, which were struck by a devastating earthquake on December 29, have begun work, and their priority is foster families.

UNICEF said on Friday that the project was initiated by the Ministry of Labor, Retirement System, Family Affairs, Social Policy and the Association for Psychological Aid with support from UNICEF.

Mobile teams will prioritize foster families, especially those whose homes have been damaged, and at-risk families included in social welfare programs.

There are 49 foster families in Sisak Moslavina County, 32 of them live in the earthquake-affected areas.

These families are caring for 125 adopted children, and 82 live in Sisak, Petringa and Glena.

Marina Ajdokovic of the Association for Psychological Aid said that in situations such as natural disasters, it is important to provide psychosocial support to children, youth and their families to reduce their anxiety, fear, and mental suffering.

And it warns that about 50% of children show various symptoms related to anxiety even six months after a traumatic event, and although most children recover gradually after an earthquake, 25-30% of them show chronic or prolonged symptoms of depression and / or anxiety. .
