Iceland has hit 40,000 earthquakes in 20 days

The northern island nation of Iceland experienced as many as 40,000 earthquakes in just 20 days.

Some of the earthquakes were as strong as 5.7 on the Richter scale.

Iceland is on high alert due to increased seismic activity in the area that has raised the threat of volcanoes.

With Iceland still experiencing earthquakes with thousands of earthquakes since February, scientists are calling unprecedented seismic activity.

Since midnight more than 1,300 earthquakes have been detected in the Reykjanes Peninsula, the largest of which is M3.4 at 08:36. The activity is mostly focused around Mt. Fagradalsfjall and East Mt. Orbjorn.

Iceland is the most active volcanic region in Europe, with a volcanic eruption every five years on average.
