According to the Los Angeles Times, a three-year data sample shows that California and Nevada experience an average of 234 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 to 4.0 a year.

Last summer, Southern California experienced the largest seismic sequence in two decades, starting on July 4.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 shook the Mojave Desert, about 120 miles north of Los Angeles, before it struck 7.1 clanks the next day, followed by more than 100,000 aftershocks.

A study published in October from the California Institute of Technology and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory found that Garlock’s fault – which stretches from east to west for 185 miles from San Andreas to the Valley of Death, began moving for the first time in 500 years after a series of earthquakes.
