‘Like an earthquake’: NC homeowner settles with Duke Energy over construction damage

NEWTON, NC (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) — A Catawba County homeowner settled with Duke Energy for an undisclosed amount of money after he said construction at a nearby substation shook and damaged his home.

Last summer, John McAuliffe said the constant roar from nearby construction at the Aunt Hill substation in Newton not only hurt his quality of life but also his home. He said it damaged priceless property and drawings and also damaged the foundation of his 1950s cottage.

A building engineer brought in by FOX 46 also agreed to look into the damages.

The family and Duke of Energy now tell FOX 46 that the matter has been “settled”. Neither side expanded on the matter.

“It’s settled,” McAuliffe said in a text message to FOX 46 reporter Matt Grant. “The truth is, you were the man who listened, and that meant the world to us.”

“We have resolved the matter with the property owner,” said Duke Energy spokeswoman Megan Musgrave Miles.
