Iran Virus News: Urges United States to Lift Sanctions on Food and Medicine

Iran has urged the United States to ease sanctions on imports of the drugs and food it needs to fight a major coronavirus epidemic.

Abbas Mousavi, spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry, said the sanctions had in fact blocked all financial channels available to Iran to buy food and pharmaceuticals. The Trump administration has re-imposed heavy sanctions on the Iranian economy after the end of the 2015 nuclear deal.

International banks should be allowed to deal directly with Iran given the scale of the epidemic in the country, Mousavi said Wednesday at a press conference held by teleconference.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday that countries wishing to offer humanitarian aid to Iran should demand the release of foreigners and binational Iranians from its prisons in return.

Iran should "immediately release all wrongfully detained Americans for humanitarian reasons," Pompeo said in a tweet, adding that "their detention defies basic human decency."

Iran released thousands of prisoners on leave last week to prevent the virus from spreading in prisons. Nearly 300 people have died from the epidemic in Iran, the hardest hit country after China and Italy.
